News Roundup 8/9/10 - The Idiots Keep Talking Edition

• We'll start with news though: A Daily Mirror exclusive links the Gunners with a possible loan move for Manchester City's Shay Given, since the Irishman is about to lose the #1 job at Eastlands to Joe Hart. While amazing if it happens, and slightly more plausible than the Pepe Reina rumor on Saturday, I honestly don't think City is stupid enough to give a rival one of their two talented keepers. • Jermain Defoe honestly thinks Tottenham Hotspur can do better than Arsenal in European competition. Look, I don't want to get into the whole UEFA coefficient thing in detail, but Spurs are pretty much guaranteed to have a more difficult path to get out of the group stage than Arsenal will. • Harry Redknapp is totally flabbergasted that Fabio Capello called up three Arsenal players for England's friendly with Hungary on Wednesday who were not originally chosen for South Africa. He jokes that since Jack Wilshere was called up without a Premier League start in his career, Arsenal must be better than the English team. Despite his intentions, he's right. [Daily Mail]
• Did you think that the Cesc Fabregas saga was over? You're wrong! Because the media is still talking to Xavi! Today's gem: "Maybe he'll come in January when Arsenal are out of the Premier League title race. Their team is just not competitive." Hilarious delusion: appearing daily out of the Nou Camp. • Blond-braided right back Bacary Sagna likes the idea of signing Emir Spahic for cover at center back. At least someone does. [Daily Mail]
• Reports are that Hull City has won the race to sign "excess to requirements" forward Jay Simpson. I'll never forget that brace he had against Barnet last month. [Daily Mirror]

• An idiotic round of useless international friendlies which is sure to set back Arsenal's training about three weeks or so begins tomorrow.

Arsenal 4: Arshavin 2, Simpson 16, 45, Nasri 75

Arsenal's annual pre-season opener at nearby Barnet started with a bang and progressed comfortably as a fairly strong Gunners line-up coasted to a 4-0 win at Underhill Stadium.

A number of first team players started, including Laurent Koscielny, who started at center back as he made his Arsenal debut. But it was Tomas Rosicky and Andrei Arshavin combined to send the diminutive Russian in alone on goal; Arshavin maneuvered around Barnet keeper Jake Cole to open the scoring after just 90 seconds of play. Jack Wilshere set up the next two goals for reserve striker Jay Simpson, whose brace gave Arsenal a 3-0 lead at the break.

Marouane Chamakh made his debut in red and white in the second half, but had a fairly quiet first 45 minutes with the team. Arsenal's offense attack cooled in the second, despite the additions of Chamakh, Theo Walcott, and Samir Nasri. Nasri, however, did add to the scoring in the 75th, taking advantage of a defensive mistake by the Bees.

Despite being named in the 22-man roster, both Manuel Almunia and Eduardo did not appear. This does not seem to be a good sign for either's future in North London. In goal, Lukasz Fabianski started and played the first half, while Vito Mannone and Wojciech Szczesny shared the second half. Barnet had only one shot on target.

Arsenal will now head to their pre-season training camp in Austria and will play Sturm Graz on Wednesday and Neusiedl 1919 a week later before returning home for the Emirates Cup.

Transfer Lies and Slander - 6/30/10

Laurent Koscielny – The Sun says the deal is done for the Lorient center back at £8.5 million. The Daily Mail says it's £10 million. The Daily Telegraph has the former number. The deal should probably be done by the end of the week. Let's get the Gooner chant machine going!

Mark Schwarzer – That Telegraph article above lists Schwarzer as Arsenal's next number one target signing once the Koscielny contract is inked.

Joe Cole – It's between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur to sign the former Chelsea midfielder. With England out of the World Cup, this deal should be complete within the next two weeks.

Loic Remy – This story has been around before (where I made a good number of Nice puns), but the Nice striker still would like to be a Gunner. Nice's asking price remains too high.

Mario Balotelli – The Inter Milan 19-year-old striker's stay at the San Siro is uncertain and he admits that Arsenal is "a great team."

Madjid Bougherra – The Algerian defender from Rangers in the SPL has spent time in England at Crewe Alexandra, Sheffield Wednesday, and Charlton Athletic, but only his brief stay in South-East London was top flight. With a Koscielny deal essentially done, I can only see this move happening if Sol Campbell departs.

OUT:

Henri Lansbury (LOAN) – Newcastle United is keen on the 19-year-old midfielder, who spent last year in the Championship on loan at Watford, and appeared for the Gunners in the final match of the year against Fulham.

William Gallas – Essentially out the door already, the conversation on his free agent singing appears to now be between Panathinaikos and PSG.

Sol Campbell – Arsenal's policy on contracts with 30+ players might have cost them Sol Campbell, as the big center back is looking for more than a one year deal. It looks like Celtic are willing to offer one.

Eduardo – The Brazilian-born Croatian has struggled with form since his catastrophic leg injury, and after the signing of Chamakh, it appears he may be surplus to necessity at the Emirates. Aston Villa is interested in him to replace the possibly departing John Carew.

Jay Simpson – The 21-year-old reserve forward has spent the last three years away from Arsenal on loan at Millwall, West Brom, and QPR, but as he desires consistent first-team football, he might have to depart the Gunners. A bevy of teams are interested.
