Yesterday, Blackpool defeated Nottingham Forest 4-3 at City Ground to win their Championship promotion playoff semi-final tie 6-4 on aggregate, having already won 2-1 at home on Saturday. Today, plenty more non-Arsenal football to keep our minds from going numb before the World Cup as the other semi-final tie's second leg is played. Today, the Bluebirds of Cardiff City take their 1-0 advantage back to Wales with them as they play host to Leicester City.
We likely won't be going as overboard with our coverage as we did yesterday, but we'll do our best to keep you posted on the game's progress, while also touching a bit on Fulham, who are in Hamburg to take on Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Europa League Final.
Ooh, to be a bluebird (for a few hours.)
2:47 pm EDT: We're underway, which leads me to believe my stream is about two minutes later than live. Cardiff in blue, Leicester in black.
4 mins: Cardiff misses a golden chance to go up 2-0 on aggregate; with the Leicester keeper cutting the angle down, a low shot is forced just wide of the near post.
11 mins: Referee Howard Webb and the Cardiff goalkeeper are both wearing yellow. I didn't think that was allowed. Cardiff have had the only two real chances thus far; a 7th minute free kick brought a big save from the Leicester keeper. Webb has also now twice given Leicester players long winded conversations, without showing a card.
14 mins: The targeted ads on the stream I'm watching have me looking for apartments in New York City and jobs in Cardiff. Thanks, Internet.
18 mins: It's almost mystifying how Cardiff haven't scored yet. A great amount of Arsenal-esque passing led to a Cardiff shot being blocked by another Cardiff player, then into touch for a goal kick.
22 mins: GOAL! Cardiff 1 (2-0) 0 Leicester. Long ball flicked forward to a just onside Michael Chopra gives Cardiff a stranglehold on the tie, up 2-0 on aggregate. Chopra's shot was pounded between the legs of the keeper.
25 mins: GOAL! Cardiff 1 (2-1) 1 Leicester. A hard, low shot was stopped momentarily by the keeper, but not enough as it trickled into the goal. Fryatt gets the goal for the Foxes, who are right back in the tie now.
32 mins: Still nothing between Fulham and Atletico Madrid, as far as I know. Booking for Lloyd Dyer of Leicester, for a two handed shove to the back of a Cardiff attacker. Big save off the free kick, again. Would've been wide anyway.
33 mins: Fulham down 1-0 just as I said that. I have jinxed them. Sorry, Cottagers.
34 mins: Cardiff's Bothroyd calls for a penalty after being obstructed from the ball in the area. Howard Webb says no. A Cardiff shot in the 35th sails over the bar.
37 mins: GOAL! Cardiff 1 (2-2) 2 Leicester. Hobard's header deflects off a Cardiff head and into the net to even the tie. It's an own goal to Hudson, and we're 2-2 on aggregate.
43 mins: Fulham are level now as well, 1-1.
HALFTIME: We are where we were in yesterday's second leg between Forest and Blackpool; even on aggregate after 135 minutes with one half left to play. In the second half yesterday, D.J. Campbell had a hat trick to power the Tangerines to Wembley. Who will be the hero today? Stay tuned!
46 mins: Second half is underway. That half was all Cardiff at first and all Leicester at the end. Remember, no away goals rule. Without another goal in the next 45, we'll head to half an hour of extra time.
49 mins: GOAL! Cardiff 1 (2-3) 3 Leicester. Foxes score off a corner and have three unanswered goals. Andy King scores on an unchallenged header after a great cross from Gallagher.
51 mins: Leicester fans are singing about going to Wembley. There's like 40 minutes left. Relax, Foxes.
54 mins: Fulham is still 1-1 as Bobby Zamora has been subbed off for some guy from the USA...
60 mins: I'm back with a stream, but not much to speak of. Cardiff substitution on the hour mark as Burke is withdrawn for Etuhu.
65 mins: Whittingham clears a shot off the line that would have put the Fox-men up two. Whittingham was the goal scorer for Cardiff on Sunday.
68 mins: PENALTY TO CARDIFF! Bruce clips Chopra in the leg in the area. Could have been a red card, but a definite penalty...
69 mins: GOAL! Cardiff 2 (3-3) 3 Leicester. ...and Whittingham makes no mistake about it. We're level again.
71 mins: Bothroyd for Cardiff makes a fantastic run down the left wing and fires a cannon shot off the crossbar. "Great stuff for the neutrals," says the match commentator. And how.
73 mins: Two subs for Leicester as Gallagher and Dyer go off.
77 mins: Howard for Leicester is booked for a late sliding challenge on Ledley.
78 mins: Another caution for Leicester; this time King sees yellow for a challenge that left Bothroyd on the ground in agony.
79 mins: We're now even in saves off the line as Chopra nearly put Cardiff ahead. Bluebird corner missed by the keeper but comes to nothing, yet they still have possession.
80 mins: Ten minutes to play here and for Fulham in Hamburg; both are level, here on aggregate. The Europa League Final is still 1-1.
82 mins: Chopra earns a free kick just outside of the box.
83 mins: That is two crossbars for Cardiff since they equalized. Whittingham off the woodwork. What a shot.
84 mins: Bruce with another take down; this time, he's booked. Someone else might have been booked too, I'm not sure.
88 mins: Marshall with a brilliant save for Cardiff on Howard's shot to keep the tie level. Corner now, out off Bothroyd, another corner, thrashed wide.
90+1 mins: There will be three minutes of added time and maybe 30 minutes of extra time.
90+2 mins: Leicester with a corner from the near side, punched away by Marshall, maybe with some help from the goalpost. Foxes still with possession, they earn a throw.
90+3 mins: Yes, Marshall punched the ball off the goalpost and out, nearly with a season ending own goal.
90+4 mins: One last free kick for Cardiff, it'll be Whittingham to take. Bothroyd stumbles in the box and there is no time left...
CARDIFF CITY 3 - 3 LEICESTER CITY: Let's go to extra time! Fulham have needed more than 90 with Atletico Madrid in the Europa League Final as well.
ET 1 min: A dramatic finish ahead as extra time is underway. Whittingham has been subbed off for Cardiff in a move that I don't understand at the moment. Leicester kicks off.
ET 3 mins: McCormack, on for Whittingham, was impeded before reaching the area. Dangerous free kick to Cardiff, but Whittingham is no longer on to take it, having strained his groin. The kick is driven hard across the box and it zooms past everyone.
ET 5 mins: Decent effort from distance from McCormack forces a diving save and a Cardiff corner. It's deflected out for a second corner.
ET 6 mins: ...which was cleared from danger.
ET 8 mins: Leicester got away with a handball in the area on that McCormack free kick four minutes ago. Substitution for the Fox-men as Kermorgant comes on for Fryatt, who scored a goal tonight. McNaughton, hurt for Cardiff, comes off for Quinn.
ET 10 mins: Chopra mishits a great look in the box, bringing an easy save. Quickly the other way, it's a Leicester corner earned by Steve Howard.
ET 12 mins: Corner was cleared, then an unfair challenge gives Cardiff a free kick, sent sailing over the crossbar by Bothroyd.
ET 14 mins: Definite booking for a sliding challenge from behind by McPhail.
EXTRA HALFTIME: Still level at 3-3 in the tie. Fulham and Atletico Madrid are still 1-1 after 105 minutes of play in Hamburg. Fifteen minutes away from penalties in both matches. I have no idea how to live blog a penalty shootout.
ET 16 mins: Second half of extra time underway with Cardiff kicking off.
ET 19 mins: Looked like an accidental stamp on a Leicester player already down injured. Ball was in the area and Chopra's foot glanced the player's face. He'll get the benefit of the doubt.
ET 20 mins: McCormack goes down and the Leicester player, Wellers, who was just down hurt a minute ago, is booked for the challenge.
ET 22 mins: This match is getting quite feisty; awful challenge from Hudson, who already has a yellow card to his name tonight.
ET 23 mins: Fulham trails 2-1, allowing a goal four minutes from time. Just then, a huge save and a Cardiff corner here in Wales.
ET 24 mins: Corner headed away, Leicester forces two Cardiff throws after a header cleared. Etuhu wins a third throw for Cardiff, but they can't slip a pass through.
ET 25 mins: Guardian informs me that Lily Allen is crying over Fulham's impending defeat. Just thought you should know that. Free kick to Cardiff.
ET 27 mins: Another near miss, this time from Leicester. All the time in the world and Waghorn chips a shot wide.
ET 29 mins: McCormack is taken out unfairly; another free kick to Cardiff. 90 seconds plus added time to go.
ET 30 mins: Quinn, with a wild challenge that was quite necessary to keep Cardiff equal, earns a yellow card. Ugly challenge that had to be made in some form.
ET 30+1 mins: Free kick to Leicester is caught by Marshall. Halfway through one minute of added time.
LET'S GO TO PENALTIES! Fulham have lost. Someone console Lily Allen.
A trip to Wembley is on the line here for a date with Blackpool, fighting for the last spot in next year's Premier League.
Berner for Leicester: GOAL. 1-0 Leicester.
Chopra for Cardiff: GOAL. 1-1.
Howard for Leicester: GOAL. 2-1 Foxes.
McCormack for Cardiff: GOAL. 2-2.
Solano for Leicester: GOAL. 3-2.
Ledley for Cardiff: GOAL. 3-3.
SAVE MARSHALL ON A CHIP SHOT! Still 3-3. Kermorgant with the miss.
Kennedy scores for Cardiff! 4-3 Bluebirds!
SAVE ON WAGHORN! CARDIFF HAVE WON!
David Marshall is the hero for Cardiff City, with two saves in the penalty shootout. The second save to end it was a brilliant leaping save, but what was Kermorgant thinking in chipping the ball softly and straight forward with penalties even at three apiece? Unreal, that shot. What a cracking game. Thanks for reading!
